They Said Yes

Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her. (Luke 1:38)

Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Josepph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary, your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. (Matthew 1:20-21, 24)

They said yes, a certain, unequivocal yes. No can it wait till later, or I really don’t want to do this, or can’t you get someone else my life is just starting to take off. Instead a simple yes, from to simple people with and undying, unshakeable faith in God. They had no clue what life would bring them in the strife torn times they lived in. They didn’t have a nest egg put aside, in fact they weren’t even sure they would live to see the next day and yet they listened to the instructions which came from an angel (I’m sure some thought they were a little out of their minds when they revealed this little tidbit.).

How many of us would say yes, accept the unknowing from a God we can’t see and an angel that people doubt even exists? What excuses would we make up, woulld we even stick around to listen to the messenger or would we beg off saying we didn’t have enough time?

What if Mary and Joseph had said no? Where would we be today? Would God have found another way to sacrifice His son for the world. I am pretty sure He would have? God has a way of making His plans come to fruition. So I guess the real thing to consider here is how can we refuse or excuse our way out of accepting His son, when two people, 2000 years ago facing worse than what we face today were courageous enough to say yes when the call came.

There is a lesson to be learned here: In spite of ferocious odds two simple people said yes to God and through Mary and Joseph, God became human and lived among us. Maybe we in our comfortable lives should follow their example and say yes to God, yes to Jesus and once again become Jesus in human form.
