This Lent: Stay Away From Satan’s Party

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. (Matthew 4:1-2)

For forty days Jesus hung out in the desert. He was tempted by Satan. He resisted by turning to His Father, the one he knew was the answer to it all.

Our human lives are like that desert. At every twist and turn we are tempted to turn away from God, to rely on our own selves. We may not even recognize the devil as he leads us down his merry path to destruction. Notice I said his merry path not the merry path. It won’t be a merry path for us, but it certainly is for him. He knows he is leading you away from the one thing that will make you whole, away from God’s love. At the beginning it may look promising, appear small and inconsequential, but the end will prove to be bigger than you can imagine and hideous. You will be without God.

Better to be more like Jesus and avoid that first step. We can’t do it alone. We must turn to God for only with Him can we avoid the pitfalls of a life of pain with Satan. Like Paul beseeches us,

… and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you , rooted and grounded in love, may have strength breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3: 17-19)

Travel with God.
