This Lent: H, I, J, K; Help and Hope for an Intimate relationship with Jesus Christ the King

Recently my grown daughter asked me if it was necessary for her to go to church all the time to be spiritual, to be believe in God.

Keep in the back of your mind as I continue, is this is never a question my husband and I asked, so dealing with it from my three grown children has been challenging. Add to that, the things I have learned about the difference between religious and spiritual led to my answer.

My first response, “No,being spiritual is not about going to church, instead it was about the realtionship she had with God.” It didn’t take too long for me to amend my answer by saying, “You should go occasionally, because like needing food to feed the body, you need church and the community within to feed your spirituality.

She seemed to accept that answer, but it nagged at me. This wasn’t the way I was raised. You went to church and didn’t question. So we moved on with life.

Now, it may seem as if I am digressing a little, but just bear with me.

Katie and I started WeightWatchers a few weeks ago. We are doing it online, because neither one of us has the time to go to meetings. Weight loss can be done this way, but from previous experience I learned that haveing the support of a group makes it easier. You have people with the same goals who can understand what you are going through, good and bad. Yes, we can muddle through on our own, but the group would make it easier.

This morning when I was thinking about our weight loss struggles, I realized having an Intimate relationship with God was the same, maybe even more so.

Going to Church provides us with the Help and Hope for an Intimate relationship with Jesus Christ the King.

It’s not about the building or the decor, though they don’t hurt. Instead it’s about God, His Word, the people. By going to Church we feed our need, add to our knowledge base, recieve the support of people who share our faith. We meet God.

So if asked the same question today my answer would be different. Yes, you can have a relationship with God without going to mass. But we should want more and the more we will  recieve when we go to mass regularly. And by regularly I mean more than once a year or even once a month. By going regularly we receive all the Help and Hope we need for an Intimate relationship with Jesus Christ the King. With it He meets more than the minimum requirement for Eternal Life. Why not get the maximum He can give us.
