Book Review: Night of the Living Dead Christian

Book Review: Night of the Living Dead Christian

Author: Matt Mikalatos

Night of the Living Dead Christian is a fun romp.  At first I had trouble with his “monster” take on things. Once I got past that, it was an enjoyable read, with some thought provoking premises that it would not hurt every Christian to consider.

A few of his notions seemed a little unrealistic, but taken in the overall context Mr. Mikalatos pulls off his ideas very well.

I recommend this book if you are looking for a light quick and sometimes funny read that will give you a little food for thought.

Book Review: The Jesus Inquest

Book Review: The Jesus Inquest

Author: Charles Foster
Book Review: The Jesus Inquest By: Charles Foster [[ASIN:0849948118 The Jesus Inquest: The Case For and Against the Resurrection of the Christ]]

When first seeing this book on a list for review I thought what a wonderful opportunity. I like to think that although I have a strong faith I am also open minded and willing to hear what other people think.

Although the book has a promising premise Mr. Foster’s arguments left me at times feeling like I was a fool for my faith in Jesus and all that occurred in His life. Then is when I put the book down and could not complete it.

I realize that Mr. Foster attempted to present both sides of the argument, but I feel as if his arguments appeared biased in favor of all the things that I have believed since childhood are false.

This was a very difficult read and I apologize to Mr. Foster for not finishing the book, but I am not ready to turn my faith over to the secular world.

Book Review: In the Aerie of the Wolf By Leonora Pruner [[ASIN:0982707487 In the Aerie of the Wolf]]

Leonora Pruner’s In the Aerie of the Wolf is an interesting gothic romance. Usually this is not the genre I read but being a Christian fantasy writer this book had some Christian and fantasy elements that I thought I could dig my reading teeth into.

Unfortunately I was disappointed. The romance and Christian elements were right on, although the Christian was sometimes a little heavy handed. The concept of a young woman being sold into marriage to save the family and ultimately falling in love with her unknown spouse was intriguing and well handled by Pruner.

It was in the fantasy and mystery elements where I believe Ms. Pruner fell short. She introduced the werewolf legend along with the disfigured residents of the castle but yet never satisfyingly explained them or tied up the story line. The battle scene at the climax of the book, for me at least was somewhat truncated and surprising. I felt the build up to the the confrontation between the brothers just wasn’t there. The reader knows that someday the brothers will confront each other, but I don’t feel there was enough suspense built in so when the battle does happen the reader although surprised does not feel the intensity of the moment.

Ms. Pruner does an good job of putting the reader in Anne Crofton’s world and has planted seeds for a wonderful romance with a touch of intrigue.

Book Review: A Wedding Invitation

Book Review: A Wedding Invitation

Author: Alice J. Wisler

A Wedding Invitation although usually not what I read, was a fun read.

Ms. Wisler does a good job with the dual storyline and it was interesting to see the Vietnamese one and get a mini history lesson.

The main storyline was interesting although I would have liked to see a little more of Samantha’s trouble with deciding between the two men. I personally was pulling for the stranger at the wedding and would have liked to see more of that relationship and why she ultimately chose the way she did.

I think there were also some untapped subplots that Ms. Wisler could have developed more fully along with some of the secondary characters.

This book is an enjoyable read. Kudos to Ms. Wisler for the mini history lesson and the little bit of romance. For summer beach read or a warm blanket, hot chocolate read I recommend this book.

Book Review: Every Body Matters: A Must Read for all Christians

Book Review: Every Body Matters

Author: Gary Thomas

We’ve all heard the saying Your body is a temple (well maybe not all, but a few of you have) Anyway how many of us really take that seriously, really think about it and how what we eat, how we exercise, even how we think and pray really does make a difference in us and how we respond to God’s calling. I know I didn’t, until  I read Gary Thomas’ book;  Every Body Matters.

Through his book I was able to see how important it is for me to be fit not for the sake of beauty or becoming more athletic, but to become in the words of St. Paul: “instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to da any good work.” (2 Timothy 2:20-21)

This book opened my eyes to the mistakes, to the wrong thinking I have had over the years. Mr. Thomas does this in a very powerful way, not by shaming, criticizing or judging, but through personal experience and stories of everyday people.

As the back cover blurb says he skillfully demonstrates how becoming physically fit can lead to:

~ increased sensitivity to God’s voice

~ renewed energy for God’s work

~ greater joy for living

~ a fortified soul better able and more willing to serve and love others

By looking at your body as an instrument rather than an ornament, we’ll find new and compelling motivation to embrace the kind of active lifestyle that fortifies our soul. (quote from back cover by Gary Thomas)

Our body is a Temple to God and should be treated as such. We should be prepared to step up and answer God’s call whenever it comes. Mr. Thomas shows the reader the how’s and why’s of this truth and it is up to us to take up the reins and truly become who God meant us to be.

Thank you Mr. Thomas for opening my eyes, now if I could quit procrastinating it would all be great, but you have planted the seed and God will nurture it.

May God’s glory embrace you,

Christina Weigand
