Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.

With Mother’s Day around the corner and the 11203056_1444953639148763_2136705268170045855_n (1)month of May being the month of Mary, I thought I would share excerpts from the Bible study I wrote Women of the Bible: A Study. I will start with Mary the mother of Jesus.

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not from you;

it is the gift of God: it is not from works, so no one may boast.  For we

are his handiwork,, created in Christ Jesus for the good works, that God

has prepared in advance, that we should live in them. (Ephesians 2:8-10 NAB)

Introduction:

God tells a simple ordinary woman that she is to be the mother

of the Son of God.  Thirty-three years later that same ordinary woman

lets that son go to his grisly death.  Throughout Jesus’ life, Mary had

many opportunities to deny her faith, to deny her God by refusing to do

the things He asked of her.  Instead, each time she responded in

faith, sacrificing her fears and dreams to do the will of God.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have favor with God. And behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

And Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no husband?” And the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.”

And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

(Luke 1: 26-35, 38)

Instead of asking the expected questions of the angel, Mary responds from her humble faith. (Luke 1:38).

Questions to Ponder:

  1. What is the angel asking of Mary?
  2. What is Mary’s response?
  3. What are other ways Mary could have responded?
  4. What questions would I ask of the angel?
  5. Would I be able to step out in the faith Mary demonstrated?
